MG XPower - Future Classic

What makes a classic - hard to say really - the MG XPower is a definitely a specialist car, but from a mainstream manufacturer and it uses Italian and British design/build with an American engine - it all adds up to an exciting cocktail.

The ingredients are all there - Carbon fibre body, huge 4.6. litre 320 or 375 BHP v8 up front.

Brutish looks with its over-sized louvres on the front wings. It looks fast standing still - very muscular and purposeful. the Interior wasn’t as successful perhaps but again its simple and purposeful.

I had forgotten about it until I saw one recently - and now there is a very early car for sale on Autotrader at a shade under 40k.

It didnt survive - partly due to poor sales and partly due to the demise of Rover Group. I believe they only made around 9 in the factory before they canned the project. around another 73 were built later from the parts I believe. The roadtesters werent particularly kind to it and its a shame as MG was in incredible British sportscar brand in its day.

My first ever car was an MG, so maybe nostalgia has kicked in, but I now want one, but I cant have one - which makes it worse.

Will it be a classic ? - like my AC it will get a loyal following and its rarity will make it gain lots of attention at future car shows, in the supermarket car park or down the pub.

I love rare cars - never been a fan of bland Euroboxes, but rarity reduces development budgets, so there will be compromises with one of these. Usually the car clubs contain some smart engineers who know how to overcome the shortcomings and share these fixes with other owners. So yes - in time it WILL be a classic & we will be saying ‘remember when you could get one of those for 40k’.
